NH Citizen’s Property Pledge

In 2006, more than 85% of the citizens of The Granite State, in reaction to the outrageous US Supreme Court decision in Kelo vs. New London (Connecticut), which trampled all over private property rights, voted to pass a new Article 12-a to the New Hampshire Constitution. It says:

“No part of a person’s property shall be taken by eminent domain and transferred, directly or indirectly, to another person, if the taking is for the purpose of private development or other private use of the property” (Please note that the phrase, another person, also applies to persons who are members or stockholders of a corporation).

Right now, HQ Hydro, a foreign company owned by the Province of Quebec, is seeking to export power 180 miles down through New Hampshire on a “for-profit” basis to the New England power grid. This ill conceived project called the Northern Pass is being promoted by Northern Transmission, LLC, co-owned by Northeast Utilities, the parent corporation of PSNH, and N-STAR, formerly Boston Edison. Northern Pass wants to use land seized from New Hampshire property owners using eminent domain for an above ground, high voltage power line on 135 foot tall towers that would decimate the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire’s most scenic and sensitive countryside. This power is not designed for use by Granite State residents and businesses as intra-state power generators currently produce 188% of New Hampshire’s daily power needs with the excess power being transmitted to out of state users.
The No Northern Pass Coalition representing residents and businesses from the Canadian border down to Massachusetts is asking all citizens and public office candidates including, but not limited to candidates for:

  • President of the United States
  • US Congress, both the Senate and the House of Representatives
  • Governor of the State of New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Executive Council, Senate and House to take the following New Hampshire Property Rights Pledge

“As a citizen of the Granite State, I hereby pledge to honor the New Hampshire Constitution, which protects the property rights of New Hampshire’s landowners from all attempts by private persons and business entities to use eminent domain to seize real property without the owners’ consent for private development or other private, “for profit” uses in violation of citizens’ constitutionally protected private property rights. “
